Typical models resemble small dogs, house cats, miniature dinosaurs, and so on, although they usually have modified paws or claws with opposable thumbs that give them some manipulatory ability.

Robots of this type are often used for home security, keeping track of children, or pest control. They can be equipped with a range of sensors and "natural" weapons.
